Job Opportunity - Investigate researcher / editor

Resource Matters is a young non-governmental organization that seeks to help alleviate the natural resource paradox - pervasive poverty in resource-rich countries. It researches its root causes and advocates better governance of resources. 

It focuses on industrial investments in the mining sector and the energy sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Resource Matters has small but highly specialised teams in Brussels, Belgium and in Kinshasa, DRC.

We are looking for a passionate researcher with excellent writing skills to investigate and report on corrupt practices in the mining sector.


Main tasks

Research, write and edit publications relating to corrupt practices in the DRC mining sector

Coming up with ideas and work with consultants to translate narrative text into compelling graphic material

Work with lawyers to assess and document potential violations of anti-corruption and anti-money laundering legal frameworks


Qualifications


The ideal candidate will have the following skills and qualifications: 

Degree in law, economics, journalism, communication or comparable background acquired through work experience

Experience in journalism, editing, communication, storytelling (essential)

Experience in investigating financial markets, extractive industry deals, financial crime cases or related topics (strongly desired)

Experience in drafting submissions for governmental or judicial institutions (strongly desired)

Excellent writing skills in English (essential) and French (strongly desired)

Capacity to write in a compelling and engaging manner

Capacity to convey technical subjects to a broad audience

Capacity to prepare materials that are ready to be published

Be rigorous, meticulous and detail-oriented

Be able to work independently

Have strong communication skills, including in a multicultural context


What Resource Matters offers


A flexible space to research, read and write long features about some of the most fascinating corruption cases

A team of highly dynamic individuals that uses rigor, evidence and passion to bring change to a very challenging environment

A full-time position for six months, potentially renewable with an extension possible depending on the organisations funding

We have a strong preference for candidates that can integrate the team at the Brussels office on a full-time basis, although we will consider excellent candidates that would prefer carrying out the tasks remotely.
