Mundo-a in the starting blocks

You may have heard about it: the centre Mundo-a will open at the end of 2017 in Antwerp. This building will host organisations working on sustainability, environment, social economy and diversity issues. It will be located in Borgerhout, next to the "EcoHuis", on a ground pertaining to the city of Antwerp. The project achieved a decisive step last week: the building permit has been approved. The light is now green for the construction of the building designed by B-architecten, which has won the architecture competition for the project.

The idea of Mundo-a arose out of a few Antwerps' organisations involved in sustainability, nature and environmental issues. They wished to gather under the same roof like-minded organisations. In order to set up the project, they called upon the expertise of a specialized company, Ethical Property Europe, which has already established and manages three similar centres (in Brussels and Namur).

Mundo centres offer more than just professionnal office and meeting spaces. They create an environment that facilitates contacts and networking, and the communal site strengthens  the visibility of each of its tenants. Sharing communal facilities, material and services helps new ideas and perspectives blossom, and create a working community.

Among the initiators of the project are a series of organisations based in Antwerp and specialised in sustainable building. Their input has been instrumental in devicing an exemplary passive and bio-ecological building.

The courtyard between the EcoHuis lying at the back and Mundo-a will become a green court layed out as an open space in the woods. It will keep on hosting the terrace of the Ecocafé en local events like BorgerRio and the yearly flea market.

In the course of the summer, the building company will be selected. The construction will start after the summer and will last a year. After that, Borgerhout will benefit from an additional asset in the neighbourhood in terms of employment, activities and image
